Aging at Home

Identifying modifications that make staying possible

Most people don't want to leave the home they love. They want to stay where the coffee pot lives in the right spot and the grandkids' photos line the hallway. Aging at home is possible—but it doesn't happen by accident.

As we age, daily life gets smaller. Stairs feel steeper. The shower feels slick. Cooking, cleaning, and paying bills start to take more energy than they used to. The good news? With a few smart changes, home can stay safe, comfortable, and yours for years to come.

Make the Home Fit the Life

Margaret, 78, loved her two-story house but quietly stopped using the upstairs after a near-fall. She told no one. A few simple updates brought her whole home—and her confidence—back.

Small changes make a big difference:

  • Grab bars in the bathroom and a walk-in shower
  • Brighter lighting in hallways and on stairs
  • Moving the bedroom to the main floor
  • Removing loose rugs and clutter that cause falls
  • A medical alert device for peace of mind

These updates aren't about giving up independence. They protect it.

Aging at Home Partners

Many times, identifying what you need requires a little more thought than simply installing some well placed grab bars.

To assure the right modifications are put in place, consider hiring an Occupational Therapist (OT) for a full home assessment.

Though most of us have only seen OTs in hospitals or other medical facilities, occupational therapists regularly serve their patients in home.

One of their jobs is to identify risks like throw rugs or lack of handles, but they also qualified to assess livability, home navigation, and daily living accomodations. These are the types of changes that help their patients navigate the home more safely while increasing capabilities and overall quality of life.

Typically, the OT will study how an aging adult moves through and lives in the home. Their report will identify needed physical changes to the home which will increase both safety and functionality for the residents.

Once complete, pare the an Occupational Therapist with a senior specialist contractor to help finalize and install the accommodations each resident requires to age safely at home.

Plan for Care—and Know Who Pays

As family members start to need help, pitching in typically starts small: a little housekeeping, some meal prep, removing a rug, or purchasing a lift chair.

Over time though, the needs change and while everyone can see the risk, it can be hard to figure out what needs to be done let alone who is going to pay for it. Each step costs both time and money, and this is where families get caught off guard. The Surprise most do not expect: Typically, Medicare does not pay for needed home modifications.

Medicare covers doctors and short rehab stays—not ongoing help with bathing, dressing, daily living, or the home changes needed to help them age at home. That cost falls to MEDICAID and is only available when an individual/couple qualifies for it. (Strict rules apply). Other financial resources to consider are long-term care insurance, retirement savings, or adult children.

Most people end up here without a plan, with the expense falling to their children or other family. The financial burden doesn’t have to fall here.

There is a type of planning that makes sure that necessary modifications are implemented without delay and keeps resources handy and accessible when a crisis appears.

Explore Planning that Makes a Difference

The pattern we see again and again: families wait until a crisis—a fall, a hospital stay, a diagnosis—then scramble to make decisions under stress. By then, many of the best options are already gone.

When is it time to start?? When the first signs appear—the grab bar, the lift chair, the little bit of help around the house—that's your signal. The quiet moment before a crisis that's when to talk with an Elder Law attorney at Silvas Law.

This is when you still hold all your choices.
